Research of film companies and Distributors

Research into Film Companies and Distributors:

I have been researching popular film production companies and what the difference between big production companies and independent are and which one would fit best for our thriller opening. We have decided to use a big conglomerate company as they are most likely to make a thriller movie and one that is produced all around the world not just in the UK like an independent production company.

Production companies: is the physical making of a film so filming scenes and editing them to bring them together to make the film.

The most popular production companies that are used mainly around the world are:

1. Time Warner
2. Sony
3. The Walt Disney company
4. NBCUniversal
5. 20thCentury Fox
6. Viacom
7. Lions Gate entertainment
8. The Weinstein Company
9. MGM
10. DreamWorks

20th Century fox stood out to me as being one of the most popular production companies as it produced many successful films for example:

1. Avatar

2. Star Wars Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace
3. Starwars Episode 3 - Revenge of the sith
4. Deadpool
5. Starwars
6. Independennce Day
7. Star Wars Episode 2 - Attack of the Clones
8. Home Alone
9. Return of the Jedi
10. Night at the museum

- 20th Century Fox was founded by William Fox, Joseph M. Schenck and Darryl F. Zanuck.

- Twentieth Century Fox Inc is an American multinational mass media corporation based in  Manhattan, New York City.
- 20th Century Fox is the legal successor to News Corporation dealing primarily in the film and television industries and is currently the world's fourth largest media conglomerate meaning it is a very commonly used film production company for many big conglomerate companies around the world.
- One of the most popular films that 20th Century Fox has produced is Avatar which brought to the box office $749million overall making it one of the most seen film.

Other companies that produce popular thriller films are:
  • Warner Bros - The Dark Knight
  • New Line - The Conjuring

Film distribution: is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience. This is the task of a professional film distributor, who would determine the marketing strategy for the film, the media by which a film is to be sold or made available for viewing, and who may set the release date aand any other key matters.

An example of a popular distributing and production company is New line Cinema which is an American film studio that was founded in 1967 by Robert Shaye. It is a film distribution company, and also is becoming  independent. After researching many different thriller films I saw that a lot of the films that I analysed are distributed by New Line cinema. For example, The conjuring, The butterfly Effect, Annabelle and The Sixth Sense. This suggests that the use of this distributing company will best fit our thriller as many successful thriller genre films have been distributed by The New Line Cinema.

Overall, as a group we have decided to work with the production companies "21st Century Fox" which is a very popular worldwide conglomerate production company and "New Line Cinema" for a distributing company as it has distributed various different thriller films worldwide not just an independent company only within the UK. Researching the different institutional parts of a film has been helpful as we have been able to make an informed decision as to what production and distributing company we use for our own thriller opening.

We will use a legal downloading site to download each of the openings from YouTube and upload them onto our iMovie to start to create the thriller opening.
